This month we introduce you to Rebecca Zentko, EHS Director for Muir Omni Graphics, one of the members who helps make our network so unique.
1. Why did you join NAEM?
A couple of years ago, as Muir Omni Graphics took on a new strategic business direction, company directors were encouraged to join at least two groups or associations related to their area of expertise or specialty. As the EHS Director, I found NAEM to be a great organization that provides a wide variety of educational and networking opportunities.
2. What do you like about your job?
Muir Omni Graphics is focused on continuous improvement and I enjoy collaborating with co-workers on any effort that creates a safer, happier environment for both the company and the community.
3. Has your environmental program received any recognition? If so, what?
We just received the Peoria County Annual Recycling Recognition Award for the fourth year in a row. Peoria County likes to recognize businesses in the area that are taking steps to reduce waste to our landfill. We also had the opportunity last October to share the story of how our simple in-house recycling initiative turned into ISO 14001 certification at the Iowa-Illinois Safety Council Environmental Conference.
4. What is your biggest challenge in your current role?
My biggest challenge is dealing with the ever changing requirements in the REACH, RoHS and other product related regulations. Just when I think I might be on top of things, there’s seven more ‘Substances of Very High Concern’ to account for.
5. What are you passionate about?
I remember when we began our sustainable journey here at Muir Omni Graphics, I researched sustainability and found a definition that touched me: "The ability to meet our present needs without endangering the future’s ability to meet their needs." I had recently found out I was to become a grandmother for the first time and that concept took on a much deeper meaning for me.
6. What aspect to the natural world/environment impresses you the most? Why?
I love the ocean. So blue and ever in motion. Peaceful and calming, stormy and violent. It’s wonderous.
7. What advice would you have for someone entering the field today?
Get organized, read, and get connected to other environmental professionals through networks such as LinkedIn. And join the NAEM!
