Speaker biographies:
John Hoekstra
John Hoekstra leads sustainability efforts at Summit, a global sustainability and energy management firm. As Director of Sustainability, John is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing client sustainability strategies, greenhouse gas, water and waste management, renewable energy portfolio development, carbon position management, corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting and other sustainability services.
He formerly worked as an environmental engineering consultant serving a variety of Fortune 500 companies, including those in the chemical, automotive, packaging, and food & beverage industries. His work included the development of GHG and criteria pollutant emissions inventories, financial and technical analysis of emissions control technologies, and water/wastewater treatment evaluations. Mr. Hoekstra has experience working in the environmental affairs and corporate governance departments for Dell Computer Corporation and Brown-Forman Corporation as well as process engineering with E.I. DuPont de Nemours. While with these organizations, he pioneered the implementation of "green” supply chain management programs and contributed to the development of corporate environmental policy and public relations communications relative to materials management.
Mr. Hoekstra has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Louisville and is a registered professional environmental engineer.
William S. Haas, LEED AP
William S. Haas is an energy and sustainability professional with diversified training in environmental science, policy, and management. With over 8 years of experience in managing complex environmental and public policy issues, Mr. Haas has expertise in energy efficiency and renewable energy program design, administration, and implementation for both utility and government sector clients.
Mr. Haas’ specialties include project management and execution, large-scale program deployment, strategic business development, stakeholder group facilitation, and program evaluation, measurement and verification. Mr. Haas is accomplished in managing energy projects from start to finish, beginning with identifying and securing program funding and continuing through project development, management and evaluation. Mr. Haas is also an accomplished public speaker and has participated on panel discussions and given presentations on a wide range of environmental topics.
Mr. Haas is a LEED Accredited Professional and holds a Masters in Public Administration in Environmental Science and Policy from Columbia University in the City of New York and a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Science from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin.
